The blue-white collar crew.
What Does Behil mean?
It’s simply the old English spelling of our founder’s last name, Beals. While giving name to our heritage, also gives name to our legacy- to tend to the hill of bees.
Meet Terrance
As a 14th-generation Mainer, Terrance brings a rare combination of hands-on craftsmanship, ecological knowledge, and design expertise to every project. His "grey-collar" background- a blend of blue-collar work ethic and professional design experience, allows him to move seamlessly between site ecology, planting design, and practical construction challenges.
Raised among the wet meadows, peat bogs, and potato fields of Aroostook County, he developed an early appreciation for the relationship between people and the land. A lifelong fascination with songbirds, wildflowers, and natural systems led him from a foundation in oil painting mixed with aircraft maintenance to studies in architecture, landscape architecture, and irrigation design.
Terrance holds a master's degree in landscape architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and brings more than 11 years of experience designing landscapes throughout the Eastern United States. His work spans rain gardens, wetlands, coastal landscapes, streetscapes, and master planning, with specialized expertise diverse habitats and microclimates.
Combining artistic vision with scientific understanding, he creates resilient landscapes that support biodiversity through thoughtful plant selection, pollinator habitat creation, bloom succession planning, and ecologically informed design. Having worked on projects from coastal Maine to Martha's Vineyard and as far as Sri Lanka, Terrance brings a broad perspective while remaining deeply rooted in the Maine landscape.
Based in South Portland's quaint Knightville neighborhood, he approaches every project with curiosity, collaboration, and thoughtful problem-solving. He believes the most successful landscapes are those that feel as though they belong: rooted in place, shaped by people, and built to thrive over time.
